P.H.F.

Powered by Audioscrobbler™P.H.F. is a band from and based in Tāmaki Makaurau (Auckland, NZ), originally the recording project of the band's vocalist, main songwriter and producer Joe Locke. At first, P.H.F. (known as Perfect Hair Forever then, with its name taken from the Adult Swim show of the same name before abbreviating it), was a recording project of Joe Locke's songs recorded in a bathroom in 2008, produced in Locke's own bedroom. The earliest release from this time period is a track called "Flavor Aid" which was released in 2010 on the now-abandoned "P HF" channel. P.H.F. later expanded into a band with friends Reuben Winter (drummer, 2012-2020), Sam Wieck (guitarist, 2012-present) and Nigel Wright (bassist, 2012-present), playing local shows around Auckland. P.H.F., around this time released a slew of albums, singles and EPs between 2011 and 2015 on Bandcamp anonymously, including a bratty punk-inspired Mall-O-Caust (2012) and intimate synth-pop Soft (2015) before releasing their watershed album 9MM in 2016, featuring a collaboration with Clairo, Sachi, Daniel Smith and Arthur Shea. In 2018, they released I Hate Myself, the band's most well-known album, through Danger Collective Records, featuring songs such as Lack Of Interest and I Hate Myself, with features from I Experienced Love (Dylan Thinnes), Emily Edrosa and Rew. Around this time, they started touring and recording outside of Auckland, as well as settling on Danger Collective to release their material. In 2020, they released New Metal, which Locke described as their most "mature" album. P.H.F.'s most recent release is PUREST HELL, released in 2022, is a tribute album to drummer and close friend of Locke, Reuben Winter (Totems, milk), who passed away due to suicide in September 2020. It features collaborations with REW, Fantasyluv and 909 Worldwide members 99jakes and Forcefeeded, with influences from screamo, pop as well as breakcore and electronica. In Locke's own words, “With P.H.F. I want people that listen to it to feel like they’re being held, or if you feel like shit, hopefully this makes you feel a little better.”
