The band was formed by Ed Wallis (vocals, guitar), Nick Goss (guitar, sonics), Jim Wallis (drums, keyboards, vocals) and Dan Davis (bass) and released early singles on Fortuna Pop! and White Heat Records before recording two albums for Stolen Recordings, 2009’s Here & Elsewhere and 2011’s Fight Less, Win More. In January 2014, they announced that their third album, Best of Times, is to be released on March 17th on Bella Union.

Over the past few years My Sad Captains have performed live at SXSW, End of the Road, Hard Rock Calling and The Great Escape amongst others, as well as live on 6 Music and XFM. In November 2011, they supported Califone for several dates of their European tour and in 2012 joined Still Corners on their UK tour.
