1. Malice is a heavy metal band from Portland, Oregon, originally active from 1980 to 1989. The band is known for their appearance on the first "Metal Massacre" compilation and for releasing the albums "In the Beginning..." in 1985 and "License to Kill" in 1987 through Atlantic Records. Their music was influenced by European heavy metal and drew comparisons to Judas Priest.

Malice was formed by guitarist Jay Reynolds, along with vocalist James Neal, bassist Matt McCourt, drummer Deen Castronovo, and guitarist Kip Doran. After relocating to Los Angeles, Reynolds and guitarist Mick Zane brought Neal, bassist Mark Behn, and drummer Pete Laufman from Portland to complete the line-up. The band gained early attention when the demo tracks "Captive of Light" and "Kick You Down" were included on "Metal Massacre I" alongside Metallica, Ratt, and Steeler. Malice debuted live in Los Angeles in 1982 and later opened for bands such as Armored Saint.

Drummer Cliff Carothers replaced Laufman, and the band worked with producer Michael Wagener before signing with Atlantic Records. Their debut album featured material produced by Wagener and Ashley Howe. For their second album, they worked with producer Max Norman, and guest vocal contributions came from members of Megadeth and Black 'n Blue. Malice toured with Alice Cooper, W\.A.S.P., Motörhead, and Slayer, although their 1987 European tour with Slayer ended early due to negative crowd reactions.

In 1987, Reynolds left the band to join Megadeth but was soon replaced. Malice brought in vocalist Mark Weitz but eventually disbanded in 1988. The band appeared performing "Crazy in the Night" in the 1988 film "Vice Versa", and Metal Blade Records released the EP "Crazy in the Night" in 1989.

After the breakup, Reynolds formed War Party with Chuck Behler, while Zane and Behn joined Monster, releasing the album "Through the Eyes of the World" in Europe in 1995 and the United States in 1997. The band’s albums were reissued in Japan in 1999 and in the United States in 2004. Reynolds joined Metal Church in 2004, contributing to the albums "Weight of the World" and "A Light in the Dark".

Malice reformed in 2006 and performed limited shows with new vocalist Brian Allen. They returned to Europe in 2011 with James Rivera and co-headlined the Keep It True XIV festival in Germany.
