Katie Dey

Powered by Audioscrobbler™Katie Dey is a singer and songwriter from Melbourne, Australia, known for her inventive and unconventionally arranged home-recorded pop music. Her vocal style often includes twisted and distorted elements, creating an abrasive croak that adds a sense of fragility to her lyrics, which frequently explore themes of fear and isolation.

Dey began playing various instruments during her preteen years and initially shared some of her songs on her blog. One of these attracted the attention of Mat Cothran of Elvis Depressedly, who introduced her music to Warren Hildebrand of Foxes in Fiction, co-owner of the independent label Orchid Tapes. As a long-time fan of the label, Dey collaborated with them to release a short album titled asdfasdf for free on Bandcamp in 2015. The cassette version issued by Orchid Tapes sold out its first pressing within a day.

She later signed to Joy Void for her second release, the full-length album Flood Network, which came out in August 2016. Since then, Dey has remained active with various compilation contributions and cover songs. In 2018, she released a collaborative album with Devi McCallion called "Some New Form of Life," followed by another collaboration titled "Magic Fire Brain" in 2020.

Dey’s second full-length solo album, solipsisters, was released through Run For Cover Records in May 2019. Her work has received positive attention from outlets such as Pitchfork, NPR, Fader, Vice, SPIN, Goldflakepaint, Stereogum, and FACT. She counts among her fans musicians including Frank Ocean, Japanese Breakfast, and Elvis Depressedly, as well as other independent artists noted for their creativity and earnestness.
