Baseck is a Los Angeles-based producer, DJ, and event organizer specializing in breakcore and experimental electronic music.
He is a unique hyperactive live performer who combines precision turntablism, demonic vocals and vicious dance floor gameboy beats. His style seamlessly incorporates elements from drum & bass, gangster rap, harsh noise, death metal, and the dirtiest of dance music all with a battle style attitude cultivated in his hometown of Los Angeles California.
He has been involved in virtually every aspect of the underground electronic music scene for well over a decade and is one of the very few working constantly to expose music that is under the radar and often under appreciated. Entirely on his own or with his crew Darkmatter Soundsystem, Baseck has consistently brought out some of the best talent in the world, hosting shows that are experimental, and eclectic.
At age 13, Baseck began mixing records and scratching on his cousin’s turntables in Lancaster CA (where he was born and raised). By 14, he was already playing out at raves. Owing much to his self-proclaimed short attention span, he developed a unique, wild, ultra fast, yet still precise style. He generally pulls between 25 and 30 songs per hour from a vast assortment of genres slaughtering breakcore, noise, gabber, drum & bass, dubstep, drones, hip hop, hard acid, etc. to create a musical experience that is more akin to live sample-based music, than one comprised of a mere playlist of other producers’ songs.
In recent years Baseck has expanded his repertoire, seamlessly combining his impressive virtuosic turntablism with creative/catchy song writing, producing a truly one of a kind sound. He writes and structures songs using a bootleg music sequencer for the gameboy (LSDJ) then adds layers of rhythm and noise with turntables and other pocket instruments. Despite the restrictions imposed by using a four-channel tracker and low-fi hardware, Baseck artfully achieves a massive rich sound. The resulting songs are hard, full, fast and constantly changing, each distinctive part structured to build intensity and then explode creating a tension and release that is ridiculously addictive. Within that pop-like structure he incorporates elements from many genres making his music unclassifiably diverse, and allowing him to play a wide range of shows from death metal to hip-hop to noise to drum & bass, to dance parties and everything in between.
Baseck is a genuine DIY electronic artist. Thus, his live sets are where his talents are truly showcased. He consistently stuns crowds scratching intricate rhythms on his turntables, pounding out beats on a tiny $1 drum machine, even physically manipulating his voice to sound like he was born with an effects processor in his throat — all while rocking rough beats and beautiful melodies written on his gameboy.
Baseck’s incredible talents have taken him all over the United States, Mexico, Europe, and Japan. And now with his debut album (Creatures) out on Cevin Key’s Subconscious Communications, he is ready to rip it up all over again. This is gameboy thrashin’ and turntable bangin’ at it’s finest.
