Animal Collective

Powered by Audioscrobbler™Animal Collective is an American experimental pop band formed in Baltimore, Maryland. The group consists of David Portner (Avey Tare), Noah Lennox (Panda Bear), Brian Weitz (Geologist), and Josh Dibb (Deakin). Their music blends a wide range of styles, including psychedelia, freak folk, noise, and electronica, incorporating elements such as loops, drones, sampling, vocal harmonies, and sound collage. The band is known for its distinctive approach to experimental rock and pop music.

The members began collaborating during their school years and later founded the independent label Paw Tracks in 1999. Their debut album, "Spirit They're Gone Spirit They've Vanished," was released in 2000. Animal Collective gained broader recognition with the release of "Strawberry Jam" in 2007, which was their first album to chart on the Billboard 200. In 2009, they released "Merriweather Post Pavilion," which became their most commercially successful album, peaking at number 13 in the United States. The album’s psychedelic pop sound had a significant influence on independent music in the following years.

Releases under the name Animal Collective may involve any combination of the four members. While the group originated from earlier collaborations between Portner and Lennox, it was not formally established as Animal Collective until the release of the 2003 album "Ark," which included all four members. Earlier projects were subsequently retroactively added to the band’s discography. Josh Dibb occasionally steps away from recording and touring with the band, though his absences are not considered permanent departures.
