| Marcelle - January 2011 'DJ Marcelle vs. The Future' Thanks to the Planet Mu label Marcelle presents the new exciting sound of footwork, a hip dance craze hype from Chicago. The likes of DJ Nate, DJ Rashad and DJ Diamond currently make the most original, never-heard-before sounds. The Belgium Crammed Discs label has invited amongst others Deerhoof, Optimo, Shackleton, Burnt Friedman and Micachu And The Shapes to a musical battle vs. the legendary Congotronic music from Konono No.1 and Kasai All Stars, to name a few. The result is one of the best remix albums ever. Jamaican dub legend Scientist works very well vs. the dubstep scene and Mississippi Records enchants us with another two blues and gospel compilations. The legendary Golden Pudel Club from Hamburg (where Marcelle is a resident dj) comes with a wicked compilation too and the UK Funky sound, another exciting development in dance music, gets represented by Randomer and Fife. On a sad note Marcelle pays tribute to the recently deceased Don van Vliet, aka Captain Beefheart, by not only playing a Beefheart single but also playing covers of Beefheart songs, showing his huge influence on the (post-) postpunk generations. All this makes this first Marcelle show of 2011 an essential one. | Paul Ackroyd - January 2011 This time out it's a three hours long installment of Kamikaze and, as ever, is full to the brim with astounding records. In experimental nonsense this month Mark Fell of SND has been a busy lad, releasing two albums in the past few weeks, so there's a track from each of them, plus a track from Marcus Schnitzler's new record, and one from Brian Eno's new album. In beats, Robert Hood works his magic with a belter of a track under his Floorplan moniker, plus funky offerings from Randomer & Fife and Tribal Guarechero, hypnotic jangling techno in the form of a new Shackleton single, and Kassem Mosse remixing Braiden to devastating effect. In laidback beats, library sounds and hynogogatronica, Hype Williams have just released their second album of the past six months, so something off that, and Downliners Sekt have returned with a new EP, so something from that as well, not to mention a monster of a track from Anworth Kirk. This Bangs & Works compilation on Planet Mu has finally dropped, taking a snapshot of the Juke and Footwork scene in Chicago, and there's plenty ace tunes on that, so I couldn't resist slipping three tracks from that into the show. In old African music this month, you can hear excellent tracks from recent compilations from the Honest Jons and Analog Africa labels. And in dub and reggae, classic tunes from The Upsetters, Reggie Stepper and Augustus Pablo ... As if all of that weren't enough for your ears to feast upon, there are four mini-mixes in the show too. For starters I'm very proud to present an exclusive mix from Berlin's Extended Modulation, covering the best in neo/modern classical and experimental minimal electronica. That's well good, worth tuning in for that alone. Also in the mix department, I'll be taking a brief look at Demdike Stare's lush trilogy of albums they've released for Modern Love over the past eight months, with a track from each album; and, **COMPETITION TIME**, a chance to win a copy of the brilliant new witch house compilation 'Isvolt', with an accompanying three-track taster mix to let you know what's up for grabs. | Rocker - January 2011 The first show of 2011 from me is three hours long, and includes a featured LP from new US band Weekend, plus new tracks from Horowitz; The Loves; PJ Harvey; Youngfuck; The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart; La Sera; Three Hour Tour; Girls Names; and Brilliant Colors. This month Anika takes on Twinkle, while Standard Fare and One Happy Island cover each other. Emperor Machine mixes Stereolab, while Stephan Bodzin and Marc Romboy prove that original is best where their classic track "Callisto" is concerned. There's also new electronica from Max Cooper remixed by Ryan Davis, while Operative and Circuit bring the dubstep. The Distractions and The Electric Sugar Children both come up with their first new material for many years, while Guantanamo Baywatch come up with some shredding surf guitar music, as well as providing band name of the month. This month's Peel's Big 45 is a very early Ska 45, while this month's Educating Elizabeth record is a scorcher from Lenis Guess. As well as little known acts, here's a little known fact: "Terry" by Twinkle was a massive hit in 1964, despite, or possibly because of, being banned by the BBC - probably due to it being seen as a call to suicide, rather than the artist's name. | ||||
