Powered by Audioscrobbler™Love Spirals Downwards is a California-based music project originally formed in 1991 by multi-instrumentalist Ryan Lum and vocalist Suzanne Perry. Signed to Projekt Records, the duo quickly became one of the label's most beloved acts, blending ethereal wave, dream pop, ambient electronica, and atmospheric drum’n’bass into an emotionally rich and sonically immersive sound.

Across the 1990s, Love Spirals Downwards released four acclaimed studio albums—Idylls (1992), Ardor (1994), Ever (1996), and Flux (1998)—as well as a career retrospective, Temporal: A Collection Of Music Past & Present (2000). Their lush, melancholic sound earned them a devoted following in the darkwave, shoegaze, and ambient scenes, and their tracks appeared on dozens of international compilations, including the Heavenly Voices series from Hyperium.

Guest vocalists Jennifer Wilde and Kristen Perry added new dimensions to the band’s evolving sound. Wilde’s performance on "Sunset Bell" -- both the 1994 and 1998 versions-- as well as her lyrics and vocals on the 1994 duet Depression Glass", and Kristen’s haunting turns on "Ring" and "Psyche" (featured in Dawson’s Creek Season 5, Episode 1) remain standout tracks in the band’s discography.

At the turn of the millennium, Lum began collaborating with vocalist and lyricist Anji Bee. Their drum and bass remix of Claire Voyant’s "Bittersweet"—credited to Love Spirals Downwards—was released on Time Again: A Collection of Remixes by Accession Records (2000) and Metropolis Records (2001). During this time, Lum and Bee also released original drum and bass songs like "Ecstatic" and "Hand in Hand" via mp3.com, first under the Love Spirals Downwards name, and later as Lovespirals.

Lovespirals’ debut album, Windblown Kiss, was released by Projekt in 2002. The record marked a stylistic shift, embracing jazz, blues, folk, and traditional songwriting while preserving the lush atmospheres and dreamy textures that defined Lum’s work. It was followed by Free & Easy in 2005, released on Lum and Bee’s newly formed label, Chillcuts.

In 2007, Projekt reissued Idylls and Ardor in newly remastered and expanded editions. While Projekt handled the physical CD release, Chillcuts managed the digital distribution of these reissues—part of a broader initiative by Lum and Bee to preserve and modernize the Love Spirals Downwards catalog.

Chillcuts has since digitally reissued the full LSD discography, including Live (2014), Sideways Forest - EP (2017), Ever [Remastered Reissue] (2020), and Flux Deluxe Edition (2023). The band also partnered with Lost In Ohio to produce the first-ever vinyl edition of Flux, complete with remastered audio and expanded packaging including extensive liner notes by Jason Moore of Opus Zine.

In 2024, Lum returned to the Love Spirals Downwards name for the release of "Noumenon," a single that bridged the project’s original sound with its current incarnation featuring Anji Bee. The revival continued with a string of new singles—"Not Myself," "Used To Be," and "Boss Mode" (2025)—which fuse dream pop, ambient electronica, and soul into a powerful, emotionally resonant new phase of the project.

With a rich back catalog, renewed creative energy, and complete artistic independence, Love Spirals Downwards continues to evolve while honoring its roots. For music, merch, and archival releases, visit Love Spirals Downwards on Bandcamp or check out the Chillin' with Lovespirals podcast atYouTube.
