Hiperson

Powered by Audioscrobbler™Hiperson (海朋森) is a five-piece indie rock/post-punk/post-rock band formed in 2012 from Chengdu, China. The members are Wang Boqiang (drums), Huang Rentao (bass), Li Yinan (guitar), Chen Sijiang (vocals) and Liu Zetong (guitar).

Hiperson was founded at the Sichuan Conservatory of Music, in the Xindu district of Chengu, where guitarists Ji Yinan and Liu Zetong met as classmates. They met singer Chen Sijiang through a mutual friend, and formed the band with Huang Rentao on bass and Chen Qingkai on drums. The latter two were later replaced by Wang Minghui and Wang Boqiang respectively. The name of the band was conceived as a phrase, "hi, person": "like a non-human entity viewing things that occur in the human realm."

Their songs often feature poetic passages, like spoken word fables, leading the listener through landscapes that oscillate between daily life and illusion. Expect a sense of the poetic narrative of contemporary literature mixed with the musical structure of hard-core punk and melodies of Chinese folk music. Unlike previous generations of Chinese musicians, these twenty-somethings reject the shackles of recent history, harkening back to the essential, sensitive, poetic golden age of rock’n’roll.

Their temperament of refreshing simplicity has led Hiperson on a path of rapid achievement. Frontwoman Chen Sijiang’s unique voice, brilliant and gorgeous as it is, does not draw the audience’s full attention away from Hiperson’s compelling bass-lines or the complex, precise rhythmic interplay between drums and guitar. Frontwoman Chen Sijiang's unique voice punctuates the complex, precise rhythmic interplay between drums, bass and guitar. They often draw comparisons to mainland post-punk legends P.K.14, whose work they’re inspired by, but have built on and taken further.

In 2023, the band collaborated with indie rock band Fazi on a song for the television drama The Long Season (漫长的季节).
