Chelsea Wolfe

Powered by Audioscrobbler™Chelsea Wolfe (born Chelsea Joy Wolfe on November 14, 1983) is an American singer-songwriter and musician from Roseville, California. Her work blends elements of gothic rock, doom metal, folk, and darkwave, often described as "doom folk" and "drone-metal-art-folk." Growing up in Northern California with a country musician father who owned a home studio, Wolfe began writing poetry at age 7 and recording songs by age 9, which she later described as "basically Casio-based gothy R&B songs."

Inspired by filmmakers Ingmar Bergman and David Lynch, as well as Soviet and apocalyptic literature, Wolfe creates music that conjures visions of other dimensions and claustrophobic atmospheres. Her sound incorporates layered guitar drone, experimental rock, neofolk, electronic textures, and heavy metal elements, characterized by haunting vocals and immersive soundscapes.

Wolfe earned underground critical acclaim with The Grime and the Glow (2010) and Ἀποκάλυψις (2011), which blended gothic and folk elements. She continued to evolve her sound with Unknown Rooms: A Collection of Acoustic Songs (2012), Pain Is Beauty (2013), Abyss (2015), and Hiss Spun (2017), incorporating increasingly heavy and electronic elements. Birth of Violence (2019) marked a return to acoustic, folk-oriented material, while her latest album She Reaches Out to She Reaches Out to She (2024) explores trip hop, industrial, and electronica, inspired by her sobriety journey that began in 2021.

Beyond her solo work, Wolfe has collaborated extensively, most notably with Converge on Bloodmoon: I (2021), as well as with Russian Circles, Deafheaven, Myrkur, and composer Tyler Bates on the soundtrack to the 2022 horror film X. Her music has been featured in promotional material for television series including Game of Thrones and Fear the Walking Dead.
