Blake Day is a songwriter, musician, sound artist, and writer based in Berlin. From an early age, he has made music and written poetry, appreciating art as “the only umbrella in the shitstorm of life”, as put by Mario Vargas Llosa. For Blake Day, true songs must have a soul; expressive lyrics require a carefully woven musical environment in which to be born, grow and evolve. The themes that are interwoven through his songs and lyrics are love, death, and rebirth – in an existential sense.
Blake Day’s idols are Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, Leonard Cohen, Einstürzende Neubauten, Tom Waits, Teho Teardo & Blixa Bargeld, and Johnny Cash – but his goal is to always create something original and unique.
On his upcoming album ‘Axolotl’, he merges classical instruments (grand piano, cello, violin and double bass) with modern electronic elements. He also loops a range of non-traditional ‘instruments’ - from metal bathtubs to vibrators to scouring sponges to e-bows on metal spirals - to create musical soundscapes as backing for his lyrics.
"This life is too short to waste my time and other people's time writing about something unimportant, something mundane, something boring. All my artistic efforts aim at shaking bones, putting hearts to the test, and reinforcing souls." (Blake Day)
