Jesus Licks are best described as a folk band. Don't let that put you off, no, really don't. This is a band that make some of the best music I have heard this year. Recorded in the bands boats and houses. It sounds like it has just beamed in from a different planet. Alien.

So Jesus Licks are a five piece band from London. So far, so good. This is how I start a lot of my reviews. But after this initial familiar ground I find myself in a different world. The world of lo-fi folk music that really doesn't come from the 'indie' world I usually start from. As I play the LP for the umpteenth time I am happy to admit I am lost. And I like it.

Jesus Licks first came to my attention when I heard the bands current single 'Dalek Chorus'. Being a fan of Doctor Who I was intrigued intially by the songs title. After a few moments it was this mesmerising piece of music that had me all excited. A simple folk tune, for sure, but equally haunting and charming. I had to hear more. So I managed to get a copy of the bands LP - 'Terrible Beauty' which even on first listen I could tell it was going to be an LP that would work for me. The singer (probably Dominique Golden but I am not exactly sure as three of the females are listed as vocalists!) has a simply spine chilling voice. Tingles and then some. And the 12 songs on this LP have a dark lyrical theme running through-out (murder, blood and some more murder) again adding to the overall feel. Haunted and echanting all at once.

Being lost in this folky lo-fi LP is simply wonderful. But it does leave me confused, I am having trouble finding a reference frame to fit the LP into. But that's great. It really is such a joyous record. It's decidedly slow paced (but not one paced) and I imagine these songs are going to take their time to reveal all their hidden wonders to me. But this is a record I know I will play in a few years time and know why I was attracted to it initially. It has a charm and an oddball feel that has me hooked from the outset. Go hear Jesus Licks and see whether you will fall under the bands spell. It took just hearing 'Dalek Chorus' for me to be intrigued and then after hearing the whole of 'Terrible Beauty' I was hooked.

Post Records artists the Jesus Licks have come up with the perfect soundtrack to all those hazy sunny days in the 80s Dan from TheDoClub spent reading tatty paperback copies of Doctor Who novels.

Apparently due to an inconsistency in the space time continuum and someone fixing it with a sonic screwdriver (with ice, shaken) Cliff Richard , Jive Bunny and Jason Donavan have not been permanently removed from the charts of this time and replaced by Jesus Licks. Their grinning faces now cover Smash Hits magazines, pencil cases and pillows.

So with banjo's at dawn our brave heroes travel through time, escaping snakes, sharks and bandits, or joining them when its fun, to bring neu!-folk to the world! Wipe the sleep from your eyes, for this is a song of waking and listen. A cry for help, a note for understanding, a tale of evolution over 100's of years sung to restraint rustic picking with a barley perceivable electronic buzz of the dysfunctional cyberman your receiving this transmission on, simple and beautifully human.

Jesus Licks : Terrible Beauty (UK,2006)****'

While two girls sing often in very close harmony, the band softly lingers and invents and interweaves all the time with pleasant melodic sounds in them, like woven stories. With simple beauty there is much surprising creativity. Once we hear the singer reproduce the sound of a cat on “Cat that you want”. There’s lose sounds of glass, a high pitched voice with a complete child choir on “Terrible Beauty” which makes this a really strange kind of beautiful track. Ducks in water and strummed guitar are a nice natural-rhythmic interlude on “The Ducks”. “In My Pit” has charming funny hysteria, with banjo. Every track is really sweet and charming, with lovely driven acid folk mini-songs inspirations with one foot in innocent girly fantasy, while life and relations can also confront different realities (“Jaws of a shark”), this music is like a cure and bridge between both worlds, saving innocence and happiness in each situation. I guess most ideas came from inspiration from relationships and sex, where a bit of fantasy and surreal poetic expressions help to make any uneasiness around it nicer. Very good !!!

part wonderfully warped liliput / raincoats style indie, part folk and part country, london's the jesus licks pull elements from all these genres and twist them into something deeply melodic whilst stamping their own stamp on their sound. the five hundred 7s are gonna fly!

This red vinyl 7" is a sweet tribute to the timelord we all know & love & is possibly one of the most charming, wonky, spectral folk tunes i've heard. It sounds to me like Thinking fellers in their spacefolk mode covering 'Doctorin' the Tardis' in a most abstract campfire fashion. Utterly beautiful! 'Eternally Lonely' is like Lucky Luke jamming with The Delgados. Or a stomping folksy Lush. It's really bloody good you know! 3rd track 'Harr Barbie' reminds me of a shambling off kilter C86 band, kinda Heavenly meets Miaow or early Darling Buds with a dash of Beat Happening. With the girl from Life Without Buildings on vox. Cripes! Got all me comparisons in there didn't I???? It's a coincidence that I've mentioned daleks twice as it happens. I hadn't seen the amazing sleeve for this record at the time. Invest!

Delightfully innocent folk on the A-side while the B shows a more live sound that's very promising. Nice three tracks of playful, warm music, and you really can't argue with a band called Jesus Licks or an EP called 'Dalek Chorus' that's paradoxically as robotic and digital as a mug of custard.
